Fly Fishing in Nova Scotia

Fly fisherMost fly fishers you meet on the rivers and lakes love to talk about finding the perfect location to build their dream fishing lodge: That special hide-away on a clean, productive river that can be fished by wading and/or by boat during a long fishing season.

The "ideal wish list" includes the ability to fish over a variety of sport fish in good water conditions throughout the season. As the discussion evolves certain other realities emerge such as wives that golf and family visits with the grandchildren. Truth is remote wilderness must come with convenient access. A secluded river lodge location just won't fly when it is 30 miles over a bush road to the grocery store or medical center.

Many of us talking about this kind of investment are already retired and still searching for the perfect lodge location. Many more have surrendered and settled for something else where their passion for fishing is fulfilled as it always was...when time and opportunity allows. Over the years I have held this thought while fishing in different places in the world. I have not fished in New Zealand or Norway or Scotland because for me and my family these places are too far away and too expensive. In recent years I have spent a good amount of time fishing in Atlantic Canada.

Unlike Newfoundland and New Brunswick, Nova Scotia does not require non-residents to fish with a guide. This freedom allows fishing when and where you want in some of the best fly fishing environments in the western world. If you get excited about fishing for big Speckled, sea run Brown and Rainbow trout, Atlantic salmon, Striped Bass, small mouth Bass from May through October in secret, pristine places, Nova Scotia has it all.

Atlantic Salmon in Silver's Pool, St.Mary's River. The best fishing is found in the northern part of the Province and in Cape Breton. To fish all species mentioned above you need to move around a little so a central location is desirable. Back to that perfect lodge location, check out Sawmill Landing currently offering a few, large acreages just below Sherbrooke Village, Nova Scotia near the mouth of the St. Mary's River. This magnificent river is truly a fly fishing paradise; clear of crowds, easy to wade, great pools and riffles. The lower part of the river is tidal (below the Village) providing great fishing for sea-run Rainbow and Brown trout. The Atlantic salmon run is steadily improving with the continuing ban on the commercial fishery.

When it's family time, secluded, sandy beaches are a few minutes away by boat. The lower St. Mary's is ideal for kayaking and canoeing. The soil is essentially delta sediment, very fertile and perfect for gardening. Sawmill Landing is approximately 2 hours drive from the Halifax International Airport. The historic Sherbrooke Village is a small, vibrant, fully serviced community only minutes away. Golf is 45 a minute drive. Tennis is available in the Village.

As with all wonderful opportunities there are always limitations. It won't be long before these few properties will be gone, purchased by those of us determined to make a dream come true.
